In August 2016, I started working as a senior reporter for Bloomberg BNA‘s international tax desk in London. Formerly known as the Bureau of National Affairs, Bloomberg BNA is a wholly owned subsidiary of Bloomberg L.P., and a daily source of legal, tax, regulatory and business information. This was my first story, focusing on a tax avoidance case involving Greene King Plc, the U.K.’s largest pub retailer, and one of the U.K.’s top four accountancy firms. At Bloomberg Billionaires, we sought to find work hidden billionaires. (“Hidden,” for the purpose of our work, is defined as billionaires who have not appeared before on any rich list.) I first came across Axel Stawski, a New York real estate developer, in December 2015. Seven months later, we published a story on him, calculating his net worth at $2.4 billion.

After undergoing a medical for his new job, James discovered that he had a life-threatening – and subsequently life-changing – brain tumour. In the requests, I asked for information on the number of people charged by police under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997, which was introduced to combat stalking.
